Grounded in nature, Michael O'Briant's work is an elegant microcosm of evolution. Always focused on colors and the relationships that develop between the layers of paint, O'Briant's palette is constantly evolving. His conscious manipulations of the textures that appear, not only in the surface, but within the layers of the paintings, give an unusual depth to the work.
Of his work O'Briant says, "I love the crackling and bubbling that appears, it reflects energy and gives playfulness to the work, just as in nature." As he pours a mixed painting medium of acrylic paint, transparent glue, and clear gel medium, tilting and rotating the glazed canvas, the organic exchange between painter and painting is ignited, and the painting tells him what it wants, what it needs. As the layers build with texture and fluidity, colors and forms merge and change.
Historically working in the tradition of figurative narrative, O'Briant's turn toward a lyrical expressionism evolved with his exposure to Cape Cod, where he now spends his summers. In rural Truro, he found himself inspired by the natural beauty and unique light of the Outer Cape, which has profoundly affected the work of so many artists for over a century. His dynamic compositions make abstract references to his favorite environs; beaches and ponds in the Truor/Provincetown area. The work implies a bird's eye view.
"Anyone who has had the chance to fly in a small plane above the Outer Cape knows how magnificent the waterways look from above--and my hope is that these paintings capture the special quality of light that exists only here, at land's end."
A native of North Carolina, O'Briant lives in Chicago. He received a BFA from East Carolina University and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He regularly exhibits in Chicago and North Carolina and is a member artist of The Provinctown Art Association and Museum. His work is in private collections in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, North Carolina, Cape Cod, and internationally.
